4/28/2013 9:17:00 PM May the fourth be with you on Free Comic Book Day in Prescott
Among the raffle prizes at Game On in Prescott Valley is an original piece of artwork from comic book artist Dave Beaty, below, featuring super hero members of the DC Comics team Justice League.
From the "Yellow Kid" comic strips of 1895 to DC Comics' recent relaunch of nearly every one of their titles, including "Batman" and "Superman," comic books have always had a super-powered base of fans.
Most collectors agree the modern age of comics first began in 1938 when Jerome Siegal and Joseph Shuster created Superman. Since then comics of all kinds are released on a monthly basis, including such popular titles as Spider Man, Star Wars, zombie comics, Iron Man, Wonder Woman and many, many more.
Prescott will don cape and cowl Saturday, May 4, as part of Free Comic Book Day, a nationwide event geared toward encouraging reading and targeting those curious about comic books by handing out a free comic to all who participate. A number of local businesses will take part in the pulpy day, including Game On in Prescott Valley and the Peregrine Book Company in Prescott. Hastings Entertainment will also participate in the annual free giveaway.
Comic Book artist Dave Beaty will pay a visit to Game On as part of the event.
"Free Comic Book Day is a nationwide event," Beaty said. "Comics are given out to the public to encourage reading and encourage the hobby. There are all kinds of events going on in Phoenix. There are events in Flagstaff. It's kind of amazing."
A number of businesses that offer Free Comic Book Day events take the opportunity to donate to charities as well. Beaty will draw for attendees at Game On in exchange for donations.
"I'm going to be doing head and shoulder sketches of people's favorite Marvel and DC characters when they donate two non-perishable food items to the food bank. In addition to that, we're also going to be running a raffle. It will be a dollar to purchase a raffle ticket and all the proceeds from the raffle are going to the Yavapai Humane Society," Beaty said.
Game On prizes include original artwork, collectible action figures, autographed comic books and more. Drawings will be held every hour between noon and 5 p.m. Beaty will also be on hand until 5 p.m. Game On in Prescott Valley will remain open until 8 p.m.
The raffle's grand prize is an original Beaty art piece featuring the Justice League of America. Beaty currently works as the artist for the Justice League comic.
Susan Lang with Peregrine Book Company said more than three million comic books will be handed out across the nation.
"All major comic book publishers are involved and have contributed issues. The Peregrine Book Company will be handing out free comics from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will have comics for younger and older children and adults - one comic book per person," Lang said.
She expects the comics for the new Superman series, the Walking Dead and Star Wars series will go quickly.
"All of which are only available by coming into one of the participating bookstores," Lang said.
May 4 is known among fans as the unofficial Star Wars holiday, with the phrase "May the Fourth be with you," becoming a popular greeting for the day.
Game On is located in Prescott Valley at 2982 N. Park Avenue, Suite D. The Peregrine Book Company is located at 219A North Cortez Street in Prescott. Hastings is located at 940 Willow Creek Road in Prescott.
