Strengthening our communities through volunteering
Getting involved, participating, doing something to strengthen our community – this is the stride that steps beyond saying to actually doing.
I was recently asked to teach a class on what it means to be a good citizen. Many characteristics came up in our class discussions, but perhaps the most important quality that stood out was a willingness to get involved -- to anxiously be engaged in efforts to strengthen a community.
Getting involved, participating, doing something to strengthen our community - this is the stride that steps beyond saying to actually doing.
We do not need to run for public office or be appointed to a civic board to strengthen our communities. We just need to be willing to serve and know what service is needed.
This brief blog entry is intended to simply identify the vast amount of volunteer opportunities available in the Prescott Quad-city area.
I was amazed to find that there are volunteer positions in almost every area of interest one can imagine - and all right here in our communities. I am not simply referring to the obvious needs we see in newspaper headlines, like feeding the hungry or helping children and stray animals. We can preserve history, work in museums, help rescue units, provide trauma intervention, be a ranger volunteer, build parks... the possibilities are almost limitless.
