Editorial: We need the truth about Benghazi
The Daily Courier

This week, anyway, it appears that all roads lead to Benghazi.

Newly disgraced former CIA Director and former commander of the Allied forces in Afghanistan David Petraeus clearly has his hands full. His extra-marital affair has cost him a lot already, including one of the most prestigious jobs in the land, but it may go even further than that.

Speculation has been raised that Petraeus, in his CIA role, may have been coerced into delivering the widely discredited opinion that the attacks on the Libyan consulate in Benghazi were the result of a demonstration against an anti-Islamic video, because someone could have exposed his indiscretions, which had apparently been going on for months at that time.

On Wednesday, Arizona Sen. John McCain, eager as ever for the spotlight, lashed out at the Obama administration, and at U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice in particular, saying that Rice was either incompetent or covering something up.

"My judgment at this time is that four Americans were killed, and the information that our U.N. ambassador conveyed was clearly false," he said. "There was overwhelming evidence that it was completely false. And she should have known what the situation and circumstances were."

The president then railed against McCain's comments, insisting that his people would get to the bottom of it and, "there needs to be accountability. We've got to bring those who carried it out to justice. But when they go after the U.N. ambassador, apparently because they think she's an easy target, then they've got a problem with me."

This particular U.N. ambassador happens to be the person who reportedly has the inside track to take Hilary Clinton's place as Secretary of State, despite her apparent misstatements after the Benghazi raid.

This, then, is the new state of relations between the administration and the opposition, one of new name-calling, accusations and inconclusive defenses.

Have we mentioned we are tired of all this?

In fact, along with his repudiations of Rice and her boss, McCain did offer a solution that we, and the rest of the American people, can live with. That solution involves convening a congressional committee similar in structure to those that achieved believable results in two previous political scandals, Watergate and Iran-Contra.

This proposed committee, we believe, should be made up of representatives from both houses of Congress, both political parties and the administration, and have access to all documents and records pertaining to the situation.

Since much of the information they study will be classified, a bipartisan makeup of the committee should allow us here on the outside to get at the truth of what took place on that tragic day, when four good Americans lost their lives while serving our country.

We deserve to have the rumors and theories put to rest. Please, Senator McCain, make it happen.

For the last four years all we heard from Obama and his administration that everything was 'BUSH"S" fault, now it's OBAMA"s fault. Seems OBAMA never "moved on" either. Liberal ignorance is at work again.

McCain doesn't care about Benghazi or Susan Rice. Here's his REAL concern:

John McCain's Benghazi Committee Plan Would Give Senator New Relevance

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/16/john-mccain-benghazi-committee_n_2145457.html

"But in January, the Arizona senator will lose his top-ranking committee seat due to term limits. The only ranking Republican spot available to him next session will be on the Indian Affairs Committee.

"Unless, that is, the Senate creates a brand-new select committee. On Wednesday, McCain, flanked by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), proposed just that: a select committee with extensive authority to investigate the Benghazi, Libya, attack and the U.S. government's response.

"The Republican most likely to hold the ranking spot on such a panel would be, of course, John McCain, giving the Arizona senator a new burst of relevance."

You're kidding right? McCain isn't interested in facts. If he was he would have attended the briefing held to give him facts instead of going in front of the camera claiming he isn't getting the facts. Pure political theater, and you're falling for it. My advice to you is chill out. Let the investigation take its course. Then if it shows there was no wrong doing by anyone in the administration, you can claim the investigation was rigged and call for impeachment. If it shows there were mistakes made then you can applaud the investigation and call for impeachment. Either way, you'll call for impeachment. You aren't interested in facts or solutions, you are just a sore loser.

You had protest in across the region and throughout the world. Do you really want to credit al Qada at that critical time? Terrorism is a political means to an end. Better to describe this an assault and avoid the terrorist references. The choice was the term "act of terror". The term that Romney walked into during the debate. But it would have been completely hog stupid to give them credit, as it would have been seen as a propaganda victory as causal agents of the other global Muslim protest.

@You Do Know-that McCain is not the elected president. Obama needs to come clean with all the facts, not McCain. Obama is the president and represents the whole country, McCain represents Arizona. Got it clear now.

There is no evidence that anyone lied to the American people about security threats. All the statements made were after the deaths had occurred, so nothing that was said had any effect on the violence that had already occurred. Let the investigation proceed before you call for impeachment. In my view, this is nothing more than political grandstanding ( as evidenced by McCain dodging a briefing designed to provide him information, so he could get in front of a camera to demand information)the pursuit of which is keeping our congress from addressing real budget issues on the horizon.

that lying to the American people to cover up REAL secruity threats is failing to protect the American people. It is an attempt to keep us in the dark with such "minor" things as real terrorism and death. This is absolutely an impeachmental offense. This excuse for a president not only failed at his number one job( to keep us safe), but he deliberately put us at risk to cover his own butt.

Obama needs to stay home and do his homework for a change. He has enough on his plate from the first four years of just "hanging around" and doing nothing. Time to get the spending cut, deficit cut, and clean out the house with telling the truth for a change. Stop flying around the country and taking expensive vacations and do the job that you collect $400,000 yrly for. Give up your salary for the next term.

Someone obviously screwed up to some degree, but I highly doubt it will be impeachable. Putting it into perspective, this administration is not screwing up foreign policy nearly as bad as the last one. Bush's foreign policy was all a lie. He, Wolfowitz, Libby, Cheny, Jeb and others signed a lengthy report, written by Bill Kristol in July or 2000, outlining their plan to accelerate the empire. No talk of terrorism - just aligning the world with "American Interests". Regime change in Iraq and Iran were pillars in this plan. This report became their official foreign policy immediately following 911. Again, no talk of WMD's or terrorism. Just raw power grabs. You can read it at http://www.newamericancentury.org. Click reports, then "Rebuilding America's Defenses".

You think there might have been an active CIA operation underway to find the bad guys? The place was an active CIA post, according to Newsweek, during the attack. Bottom line is that the request for additional security and who denied it should be the issue, not what someone said on a talk show.

You liberal whiners and neocon neanderthals should get a hobby. Oh, wait, you already do. You love to talk and blame instead of solve. Run for congress you would fit right in.

Article comment by: Presidents Should Be Held Accountable

I think most people forget that the President works for us, the taxpayer's, and should be held accountable for his actions. We don't need a leader who lies and can't be truthful. Everything with Obama is "under investigation", no matter what the topic because he's hiding something or just doesn't know how to tell the truth. This is not good. Clinton lied to the public also and that shows weakness. Doesn't matter what party they represent, they are being paid by us, the taxpayer.

The truth will never be known just as the truth about Fast and Furious will never be known. The administration will continue their cover-up and lies and the mass media will drop it as soon as another juicy sex scandal is discovered. Americans tend to have a massive case of ADD when it comes to the important things and would rather watch some sort of mindless "reality TV" type news coverage. Col. Jessup was right, "You can't handle the truth".
Re: the wars in the Middle East. I'm not sure how anyone could have thought that we would be able to change the thinking and mentality of a people who have spent hundreds of generations in a feudal/theocracy type of government. They have not concept of democracy and no willingness to learn it. The males love their dictatorial powers given to them by their religion and fear nothing greater than the entire concept of "equal rights". It was an ill-fated affair from the very beginning and has no chance of success, rather it destabilized the entire region and destroyed the only check against Persian domination in the entire region. Both Iraq and Afganistan will devolved into Islamic Theocracies, both violently hostile to the US and Western Civilization.

Impeachment? That's wasting everybody's time and money. And some Watergate-syle circus won't solve any problems either. Just get rid of Susan Rice and let her get a real job. She's a bozo and everyone knows it. I'll take that with fries Susan.

Genl Petreaus testified this morning under oath, that they knew it was a terrorist attack within hours and that comments to that effect were removed (by whom will be the question, at who's order) from Susan Rices' and his own press reports.

Impeachment is coming? Really? Let me guess - this prediction is brought to us by the same folks who predicted a "big win for Romney". Probably using the same scientific methods they used during the election. Isn't it about time that you dopes realize that Fixed Noise and the boy band of Oxycontin, Hamizme and Bleak are entertainers not news people? They tell dim wits what they want to hear - not facts. Meanwhile a little nerd with a laptop accurately predicted virtually every race in the election - before the debates and before Sandy. When he says the wing nuts suffering from rabid dogma have the votes to impeach we can believe it. Till then it's just the wishful thinking of a bunch of whining losers.

Someone from the group of prematurely giddy please answer two easy questions. The last time the righteously indignant got their panties in a twist and went after Clinton, how'd that work out for y'all? One's become an international statesman and one's a has-been whose flame flickered briefly in the primaries along with the other charter members of the Republican Mensa Society Bachman, Perry, and Cain.

The second question is even easier. In the unlikely event that Obama got impeached AND removed from office, who do you think would become president? I'll give you a hint...his initials are JB not MR. Still don't have it? HIs wife has a PhD not an elevator for her Cadillacs and he's not nearly as patient and polite with fools as Obama is. If he's who you want in the White House, then have at it.

Y'all have a nice day in Fantasyland.

This is the same McCain that voted to confirm another female named Rice after she had stated that weapons of mass destruction existed and was a reason to attack Iraq, all based on inteiiligence was untrue and was probably cherry picked, which resulted in many American deaths. Now this female named Rice should not be confirmed because she gave a reason based on intelligence that may turn out to be untrue, but resulted in NO deaths( the 4 deaths had already happened). Then he complains of not getting information while ignoring a briefing designed to give him information. And now we hear cries for impeachment of the President when the derelection of duty is clearly at the feet of McCain and Graham.

If I were McCain I'd skip a 3 hour freaking briefing/dog&pony show too. It's not like anyone there is going to tell the truth. Why waste your time. Those people aren't going to tell the truth until it gets beat out of them. Maybe they'll just scamper away with their tail between their legs like General Petreaus.

Article comment by: This should be interesting

We're in for a real treat folks.

McCain gibbering we are not able to get the real information while at the same time he won't go to informational meetings.

It will come out that Susan Rice was repeating what was known at that time (very little) based on the information that was there. Drastically different than the first Ms. Rice (Condi) who also said what she was told to say but did it knowing it was all lies ("Nuclear clouds", WMD's, etc.).

Presumably the question will be asked as to why the Republican controlled Senate voted in both 2011 and 2012 to drastically cut funding to the State Dept. in general and their security specifically.

All this because the Republicans don't want Ms. Rice or anyone else suggested by the Administration. They will, in all liklihood, "accept" John Kerry for some position. That would lieave his Senate seat open in Massachusetts and they would/could appoint Scott Brown to it, thus upping their numbers.

Politics. Gotta' love 'em.
