Letter: Outrage with sheriff is a double standard

EDITOR:

I read with great dismay the letters in the Feb. 5 Courier, written by Mr. Naumann and Mr. Quinn. Both these letters express great outrage with the comment by Sheriff Mascher. They are appalled and disgusted that the sheriff's statement is that he was sworn to uphold the Constitution and may (and I emphasize "may") not enforce parts of a yet to be passed law that he considers unconstitutional.

At the same time, I have not heard any outrage by the two men nor those that think like them regarding statements made by Mr. Obama and Mr. Holder that they will not enforce existing laws on people in this country illegally. How is it that Obama can state that he will not enforce law and that is OK while the sheriff makes a statement about enforcing a possible future law and somehow that is terrible. Double standard?

Mr. Quinn further states that the constitutionality of a law is the purview of the courts and legislature. Interesting that Obama states that if he doesn't get his way, he will bypass both other branches of government and rule by executive decree. To paraphrase Mr. Quinn, such decisions are not in the office of the president. This presents an interesting conundrum. Is any law enforcement officer required to uphold a presidential executive decree that is not a law passed by the legislature and upheld by the courts and, therefore, not constitutionally mandated for enforcement?

Guess since Obama and Holder are refusing to enforce immigration laws the record number of deportations are what? The product of self-deportation? In addition, the 12 million undocumented that were here in 2007( under Bush) are at 11million now.And what are all those border agents doing along the border? Don't they fall under the command of Obama or are they just down there on their own?
And D. Salmons. You don't upset me at all. You are grand entertainment. You couldn't do more to display the complete idiocy of the right wing even if you were a liberal plant. I urge you to keep posting your nonsense. Maybe in 2016 Hillary will win by even a bigger margin than Obama did this time.

By any measure our Sheriff is paranoid and delusional.

@bitter clinger. Again with the impeachment nonsense. We get you don't agree with his policies but impeachment is laughable. If impeachment were in the cards for anything done by this President, the only body that can bring the President to justice( in your delusion) is controlled by your Republican Party. They would bring those charges in a New York minute if they had any semblance of a case.
Your only option is to keep up with your diatribe in the Courier to no effect or convince your Congressman Gosar to initiate impeachment proceedings ( good luck with that). Cling to your embarrasing delusions if you must, but you are powerless when it comes to displacing this democratically elected( 2 times) president.

Ah Mr. Bitter-Clinger you seem to be clinging to tea driven hatred of President Obama without any reasoning except your dreamed up rants with no factual statements. Can you tell me which laws President Obama and Attorney General Holder said that they would not uphold??

Article comment by: Bitter Clinger ~ Sheriff Mascher is a good man and honest cop

It amazes me that while President Obama, and Democrats galore, ignore laws they don't like and refuse to enforce laws passed legally by the same political body they belong to (US Congress and Senate), people in Prescott complain about Sheriff Mascher taking a stand against enforcing unconstitutional edicts from the President spit out on a whim.

From the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), to Fast & Furious, to blocking oil drilling with bogus Executive Orders, to preventing Immigration Courts from legally deporting Obama's own criminal (and in your face) living on the public welfare dole relatives from Kenya, why should Sheriff Mascher or any other politician worry about enforcing non-existent laws at all.

It is now widely reported that President Obama himself is sponsoring an illegal alien at the State of the Union address, and also to sit at the head table in Congress while lmmigration Custom Enforcement officers and Border Patrol agents (10 feet away) are not allowed to arrest them.

From the Code of Hammurabi, to the Magna Carta, to Sir Robert Peale, to the US Constitution one theme is prevalent before all others.

Laws must be enacted by a legislative body, not be in conflict with laws of the land, and government officials must equally enforce them on all persons.

Obama is defying his constitutional oath. Sheriff Mascher is upholding his vows.
Sheriff Mascher shoud be in Washington.
Obama should be in jail awaiting his impeachment trial.

If only we had more local Sheriffs to enforce the law, and less DC pols to ignore the ones they don't like.

Can anyone tell me which laws Obama has said he won't enforce? I think this is another right wing fairy tale.

His job is to uphold the law and do as he is told. Activist sheriffs are not wanted. He should clean up his police force and their gang activity before spouting off about his personal feelings.

.... from the pseudo intellectual "scholars" around here.

Sheriff knows he can't (and won't) do anything, but scores his political points by pandering.

Neat trick.

Sadly transparent, but boy the base sure gobbles this stuff up.

The population of Yavapai is 211,033. This man was hired to be the sheriff of all the people and not just the ones who he has a high moral opinion of.. We don't hire public officials to be busybodies or finger waggers. Bad habits here, legal or illegal, are the personal maters of the people of Yavapai County not dirty laundry to be aired on the world stage. We are not members of some church and no public official is hired to shame citizens into changing their behavior. Scott Mascher has said to the world, "The people who provide my bread and butter are druggies and criminals, and I loath them."

A Sheriff is an elected official.

As such, his prime objective every hour of every day is his re-election.

He thinks this will either get him the votes or the campaign contributions.

@Arden Kurtz. The practice of being a useful idiot is exemplified by the actions of those who at the mention of gun violence enrich gun dealers and manufacturers. They are laughing at you and telling you that your government is trying to take your guns away while you clean their shelves of ammo and semi- automatics. They are profiting handsomely off your disillusionment. No one is trying to take your guns away, by the way.
So you can deny it all you want, but you have become what you despise. You have become that useful idiot.

With one statement of disobedience, our Sheriff has done more to protect people and be worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize which he will never see.

Meanwhile, Bronco Bomber, who - best I can see - has done nothing to improve domestic or world peace, has a Nobel Prize hanging on his wall.

Go figure.

You have a good idea. Unfortunately it won't work. Liberals do not proliferate through human interaction. They multiply do to the forces of entitlements, laziness, and rose colored glasses.

Nullification is a centuries old act. If any individual determines any yes ANY law is in violation of the objective Rule of Law, that law does not need to be obeyed. I nullify any law that does not comport to the objective standard.

Again, can you Mr. Hoy or Mr O.O. point out any laws that the President and Attorney General Holder are NOT enforcing. I am sure that charges would have been brought by the Congressional House if they could wrap their greedy republican hands on something they thought might get this President .What Mr OO commented on sounds like conservative talk radio spin and is full cup of tea! Too much Faux and local hate radio Mr. OO and Mr Hoy.

I can explain it Mr. Hoy. The reason Obama and Holder can ignore it is because they are horrible, and the sheriff isn't horrible. Eveyone knows Obama is a horrible president, and "Mr. Fast and Furious" Holder is just a cut above a common crook.

Naumann, Your comment is so ignorant it belies thoughtful discussion. If you have to ask the questions you did in your post, you have no business even posting here. Normally, I'd tell you to look up the information you ask for yourself, but your case is hopeless, so I'll help you out. He refuses to enforce immigration laws, and has ICE agents suing him because they can't do their jobs and live up to the oaths they took. His refusal to enforce the DOMA act. The refusal to turn over FAST AND FURIOUS documents, with the claim of executive privledge, which if applicable, and it's not, means Obama knew about the gun running, and was up to his eyeball in it. These are just a few I can think of, off the top of my head.

We're past the point of there being any benefit to debating issues with liberals. Logic, reason and most of all, FACTS, do not matter to these people. That's a sickening yet very real situation.

They don't like guns and most liberals would like to see gun rights totally revoked in the U.S. They want to have mass illegal immigration continue unabated along with granting all kinds of rights and benefits to illegal aliens. They want to allow openly gay men to serve as Scout Masters for your sons. They want un-restricted abortion rights while also wanting to eliminate the death penalty for society's most horrendous killers. They want religion completely removed from our public lives. They want punitive taxation on those who produce and achieve in this country. They want to allow hostile, aggressive homeless people to run our public parks and other areas of our communities. They want America to decline militarily and economically so we'll be more "equal" with other countries in the world.

Of course you can't reason with such people. Don't even try.

p.s. If you aren't already, be sure to make yourselves aware of the term "useful idiots" and how it applies to a large segment of our population in the U.S. today. You will also see here on these comment pages some people deliberately MIS-using the term for their own devices. They think it's clever to manipulate the meaning of the term. They'll suggest that people who buy guns are "useful idiots", etc. But anyone who informs themselves on the proper use of the term will easily see right through those pathetic attempts.
