Letter: Carry on to honor those who cannot

As a former marathon runner, I know full well the endless hours of training, and that it is a test of will as well as strength. From early-morning darkness on empty streets in Orlando to ankle-twisting brick roads in Amsterdam, it was the spectators who kept me going. A smile, a wave, a cup of water from a volunteer - you carried the runners along the race. To see the carnage at the Boston finish line and think of all those people wounded for no good reason, it is devastating.

For the runners who lost loved ones on the sidelines and saw the devastation, the pain must be unimaginable. To have trained and dreamed of completing this race for whatever personal reason, and to lose your legs, your hope, your life...

HOW ... WHY.

My heart also goes out to the first responders. You were the ones running into the danger to help perfect strangers. It takes a special person to do that. You will be the ones to live with the faces of those poor souls for the rest of your lives. I am humbled by your strength.

The question will forever be, how can we heal from this terrible wound. We go on, we run for those who cannot, we smile and wave for those who can. We honor selfless courage in the face of great sorrow and pain. And we go on for those who cannot.

How: A Bomb
Why: Islamic terrorism.
Although the current administration will never just admit it. Doesn't serve their politics.
They are allowing people reported to them to be Islamic radicals stay in the country without monitoring and this is what we get.

As a retired first responder I thank you for your thoughtful words. I have a strength in me that comes from my Lord and Saviour and as we know , peace will not come in this life and we encourage one another while we can.

Embodied in your letter is the exact reason WHY people like that attack us, and also the exact reason they will never succeed. The always present questions, fears, and dismay caused by this type of senseless, feral attack is just what predators like this want to instill in us as a society, while trying to shut down our will to continue living normal lives. Your final statement is WHY it will never work...the spirit if Americans to overcome adversity, pull together under the worst of circumstances, and to continue on despite overwhelming odds or challenges is just why they lost before they ever got started. I wish to thank you for your comments to and about the first responders, as I had been one for many years myself and it is humbling to see those who appreciate the hard work and dedication of the few who "Run Toward" danger, instead of away from it. Thank you for this heartfelt letter, and for answering your own question...
