Column: Reflecting on 50 years as soul mates
The following - Part Four in my three-part series delving into the life and times of Jim and Janet Messerschmitt as described in Jim's recently published autobiography - focuses on the latter, an exceptional lady who was his best friend and helpmate throughout their marriage that spanned a half-century.

First, let's take a peek at the workaday Janet. In retirement, she "kept a full schedule of volunteer work with various church and service groups," Jim wrote.

Column: Never give up on love (just short of kidnapping!)
The "Beyond Expectations" title of the autobiography that Prescott's Jim Messerschmitt came up with features highlights galore relating to that overview. But there was one person in his life who was the primary catalyst fueling his "beyond" journey. That person was his wife, Janet.

Column: Be wary of scams targeting social security recipients
These days, everyone needs to be cautious of scams -- Internet, mail, even phone scams - which can damage your credit score and pocketbook. Anytime someone asks for your personal information, you should be wary. Particularly cruel are swindles that target Social Security beneficiaries.

The easiest - and most popular - online retirement service available
You've probably heard that it's the 75th anniversary of Social Security. However, there is another important birthday going on.

Column: There's nothing wrong with doing the right thing right
In the dog-eat-dog business world we live in, proper ethics too often get lost in the pursuit of profit. Cutting corners and conniving are commonplace, and adhering to the Golden Rule often is viewed as a laughable mantra suggesting extreme naiveté. But it doesn't have to be that way. And I'd like to offer up Jim Messerschmitt's approach as proof.

Payments arrive with direct deposit, no matter what
These days, almost everyone gets their benefit payment by direct deposit. Whether you receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you can depend on your payment arriving in your account on time, every time. If you don't already have direct deposit, there are good reasons to sign up.

For one, less money and time spent driving to the bank to cash your check helps you save.

Messerschmitt's autobiography reveals good, bad
Prescott's Jim Messerschmitt has written and published his autobiography. And I must say, in a word, that I'm "Messerschmitten" with the 358-page account of his life. (I know. "Messerschmitten" isn't a real word, but you know me and my eccentricity in such matters.) But I'm here to say that the volume is chock-full of buoyancy, poignancy - even clairvoyancy.

Celebrating 75 years of Social Security
This month Social Security, the most successful domestic program in our nation's history, celebrates its 75th anniversary.

On Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. With one pen stroke he laid the foundation of modern American social policy. Today, millions of retirees live in dignity thanks to their monthly Social Security benefit payment. Over the decades, Social Security expanded to not only protect against the risk of poverty in old age, but also the economic risk of career-ending disability and the premature death of a worker.

Coming clean to clear the air
I'm not a fundamentally bad person. Honest! But I did a bad thing last Wednesday - inadvertently, admittedly, but still bad. I could blame my faux pas on Blue Bell ice cream, but that would be unseemly and a cop-out. No, instead it was simply stupidity on my part, and conscience dictates that I should set the record straight and extend a sincere apology to any fellow motorists who see me as a crude, rude dude.

Request a speaker for your special event
As the nation's most successful domestic program, Social Security is something worth learning more about. That's why the representatives at Social Security are available to share news and information about the programs and how they work.

Column: Words can work, or not work, many ways
OK, fasten your seatbelts because we may be in for a bumpy ride here. It's a silly word game I've concocted that may not please everybody (see end of column), but I'll embark on it anyway. What it involves is turning words (or even phrases) into silly nonsensical terms. Examples:

Nationally, locally and individually, Social Security makes a difference
Social Security reaches almost every family in the United States, and at some point touches the lives of nearly all Americans. It not only helps older Americans, but also workers who become disabled and families in which a spouse or parent dies.

Today, about 159 million people work and pay Social Security taxes. More than 53 million people receive monthly Social Security benefits. In 2009 alone, those benefits came to about $675 billion.
